Mounjaro Vs Wegovy: What’s the Difference?
Mounjaro® and Wegovy® are both leading injectable treatments for weight loss, that are administered weekly. Although both drugs work in similar ways, they are not the same.
The active ingredient in Mounjaro® is called Tirzepatide. This ingredient activates two hormonal receptors GIP and GLP-1. When activated, these receptors work to suppress the appetite, regulate blood sugar levels and slow the rate of food leaving the stomach – all of which results in weight loss.
The active ingredient in Wegovy® is called Semaglutide. This works by mimicking the hormonal receptor GLP-1, resulting in the same actions mentioned above. The only difference, Wegovy® does not mimic GIP.
Can you switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy?
Switching weight loss treatments is possible but should always be guided by your local Day Lewis pharmacist.
You must not take Mounjaro and Wegovy together as this can cause some serious side effects.
Dosages:
Mounjaro has 6 doses, with a starting dose of 2.5mg, which you’ll take for 4 weeks. The other Mounjaro doses are:
- 5mg
- 7.5mg
- 10mg
- 12.5mg
- 15mg
The maintenance doses for Mounjaro are: 5mg, 10mg, or 15mg. You can stay on a lower maintenance dose if you’re happy with your results or get side effects at a higher dose.
Wegovy has 5 doses, with a starting dose of 0.25mg, which you’ll also take for 4 weeks. The other Wegovy doses are:
- 0.5mg
- 1mg
- 1.7mg
- 2.4mg – the maintenance dose
Is Wegovy or Mounjaro more effective?
Wegovy and Mounjaro have both been shown in clinical studies to effectively support weight loss.
In one trial, patients taking Wegovy (Semaglutide) experienced up to a 16.9% reduction in body weight after 68 weeks of treatment.
For Mounjaro (Tirzepatide), another trial found weight reductions of up to 22.5% after 72 weeks.
It’s important to note that for best results, treatment should be combined with healthy lifestyle habits, including a balanced diet and regular physical activity including resistance training.

Which is more cost effective?
Eli Lilly, the manufactures of Mounjaro, recently announced a price increase for all strengths of their weight loss treatment. This has left many patients already taking Mounjaro concerned about its affordability, making Wegovy a more affordable treatment option that also provides results.
To support our existing patients on Mounjaro, Day Lewis will be absorbing up to 50% of the price increase.
