Alcohol when not used in moderation can be harmful to your physical and mental well-being. Harmful drinking can have wide ranging effects on the lives of individuals, their family, friends, relationships, and work.

Both men and women are advised to not drink more than 14 units of alcohol each week and to spread consumption equally over a minimum of 3 days. If you are unsure and would like to receive alcohol advice speak to a health care professional.

What are the effects of drinking too much on my health?

Short term health risks of alcohol misuse could include:
  • Alcohol poisoning
  • Being a victim of violence
  • Becoming violent
  • Accidents that lead to injury
  • Not being able to remember what happened whilst intoxicated
  • Having unprotected sex whilst under the influence
Long term serious health risks include:
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Liver disease
  • Depression
  • Dementia
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Premature ejaculation
  • Infertility
