Hepatitis B Vaccination

Hepatitis B is a liver disease that can cause mild illness or a serious lifelong illness. Our hepatitis vaccine can provide protection against the virus for people at high risk.

The Hepatitis B vaccine is routinely offered to people thought to be at increased risk of getting the virus or having complications through contracting it. The vaccine provides protection against the virus which is a major cause of serious liver disease, including cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Causes of hepatitis B:

The disease is spread when blood, semen or vaginal fluid infected with the hepatitis b virus enter the body of a non-infected person.  This can be through sexual contact or exposure to blood from needlesticks or other sharp instruments.

Who should have the hepatitis B vaccine?

In the UK the hepatitis b vaccination is recommended for:

  • People from or travelling to countries where the disease is prevalent
  • Health workers who regularly vaccinate, take blood, or encounter body fluids
