Migraine Treatment

What is a migraine?

A migraine is a moderate to severe headache, usually involving a throbbing pain, felt on one side of the head. Migraine is a common condition usually appearing in early adulthood. 1 in 5 women and 1 in 15 men tend to be affected by the condition.

Other symptoms of a migraine include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Increased sensitivity to light or sound
  • Visual disturbances like flashing lights

Causes of migraines:

The cause of a migraine is not entirely known. They are thought to be caused by possible temporary changes  of the blood vessels in the brain. 50% of people who experience migraines tend to be related to someone else with the condition indicating that genetics may play a part.

Triggers of migraines:

  • Certain foods or skipping meals
  • Stress
  • Lack of sleep or jet lag
  • Change of weather
  • Hormonal changes

Different types of migraines:

  • Migraine with aura: warning signs tend to appear before the headache, like flashing lights
  • Migraine without aura: migraine develops without warning signs
  • Migraine aura without headache: migraine symptoms develop without the headache

Whilst some people experience migraines several times a week, others may have a long gap between each migraine.

 Migraine Treatment:

Whilst there is no cure for migraines, there are several treatments available to help ease the pain. If you are diagnosed with migraines, pharmacies may be able to offer prescription medication to help ease the pain. Speak with your local Day Lewis pharmacist to find out which medication may be best suited to your symptoms.

If you experience migraines, try to take medication as soon as the symptoms begin.
